Frequently asked questions

How are the hosts on these pages chosen?

Each page applies criteria set in advance, then ranks the hosts it keeps by RackList Score, highest first. The team can pin a listing to the top or leave one out, but it never reorders the rest by hand. No spot on these pages can be bought, and no sponsored placement appears on them.

What is the difference between shared, VPS and dedicated hosting?

Shared hosting puts your site on a server with hundreds of others, cheap but limited. A VPS gives you isolated resources on a virtualised slice, a good balance for a growing project. Dedicated rents you the whole physical server, maximum performance and isolation, at a higher cost.

Should I always pick the cheapest hosting?

No. The cheapest plans cut on availability guarantees, support response time and bandwidth caps. Compare the price against the RackList Score: a 20% pricier plan at 99.99% availability usually beats the cheapest plan at 99% once the cost of downtime is taken into account.

What is availability and why does it matter?

Availability is the share of time your hosting is reachable from the internet. 99% sounds high but stands for about 87 hours of downtime a year. 99.9% stands for 8.76 hours, and 99.99% for about 52 minutes. RackList measures availability through a community probe network and publishes rolling 7, 30 and 90-day windows for the hosts covered by those measurements.
